Caring for Your Patola Dupatta

A handwoven Patola dupatta is made to last for generations. A little care in how you clean, press and store it keeps the silk soft, the colours rich and the motifs sharp for years.

The four golden rules

  1. Dry clean onlyGive it to a dry cleaner who handles pure silk. Never machine wash.
  2. Keep it out of the sunStrong sunlight fades the natural dyes over time.
  3. Store it in soft cottonWrap it in a muslin or cotton cloth, never in plastic.
  4. Refold it oftenChange the folds every two to three months so the silk does not crease or crack.

Cleaning

What to do

  • Dry clean only, especially for the first clean. Tell the cleaner it is a handwoven silk Patola.
  • Clean it only when needed. After wearing, simply air it in the shade for a few hours.
  • For small marks, gently blot with a clean, dry white cloth and take it to the dry cleaner soon.
  • Ask the cleaner to use a mild, silk-safe process and low heat.

What to avoid

  • No washing machine, no soaking and no bleach.
  • Do not rub or scrub a stain; it can spread the colour and roughen the silk.
  • Do not wring or twist the dupatta.
  • Do not use stain removers or detergents at home without testing them.

Why dry clean? Patola colours are dyed into each thread by hand. Water and harsh soaps can make deep colours bleed into lighter ones, especially in the first few cleans.

Quick help for spills

Spill Right away Then
Food or drink Lift off anything solid, then blot gently with a dry white cloth. Dry clean within a day or two. Tell the cleaner what it was.
Oil or ghee Blot, then sprinkle a little talcum powder and leave it for a few hours. Brush the powder off softly and dry clean.
Makeup or lipstick Blot only. Do not use water or wipes. Dry clean and point out the spot.
Water drops or rain Let it dry flat in the shade. If a mark stays, press lightly from the reverse with a cloth on top.
Perfume Air it out in the shade. Next time, spray perfume before you put the dupatta on.

Ironing & steaming

  • Set the iron to the silk or low setting.
  • Iron on the reverse side, with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the dupatta.
  • Keep the iron moving; never let it rest on one spot.
  • Do not spray water directly on the silk, as it can leave water marks.
  • A gentle steamer held a little away from the fabric is a safe way to remove creases.
  • Press zari borders from the reverse only, and lightly.

Storing your dupatta

Do

  • Wrap it in a muslin or soft cotton cloth, or an old cotton dupatta.
  • Keep it in a cool, dry cupboard, away from damp walls.
  • Fold zari borders inward so they do not rub against other clothes.
  • Place a few silica gel sachets nearby to keep moisture away, especially in the monsoon.
  • Take it out and air it in the shade every few months.
  • Refold along new lines each time you put it back.

Don't

  • Do not store it in plastic bags or plastic boxes; silk needs to breathe.
  • Do not hang it on a wire hanger for long; the weight can stretch the silk.
  • Do not put naphthalene balls or perfume directly on the fabric.
  • Do not store it while it is even slightly damp.
  • Do not keep it in direct sunlight or near a window.

Tip: For a natural guard against insects, keep a small cotton pouch of dried neem leaves in the cupboard, not touching the dupatta.

While you wear it

  • Put on perfume, deodorant and hairspray before draping the dupatta, and let them dry.
  • Use small, smooth safety pins, and pin through the border rather than the body of the dupatta.
  • Watch out for sharp jewellery, bangles and bag straps that can catch the threads.
  • If a thread gets pulled, do not cut it. Gently ease it back from the reverse with a pin, or ask us for help.
  • After the event, air it in the shade before folding it away.

Care by weave

Single & Semi Ikat

Follow the golden rules: dry clean, press on low heat from the reverse and store wrapped in cotton.

Double Ikat

An heirloom piece. Always dry clean, store it flat or loosely folded, and refold it every couple of months.

Tissue & Zari

Keep zari away from moisture and perfume so it does not dull. Fold the zari inward and wrap in muslin.

Bandhani

Do not stretch or pull the knotted pattern. Steam lightly instead of pressing hard, so the texture stays.
