Everything you may want to know before you choose your Patola dupatta: the weaves, the motifs, how to spot a real handwoven piece, and how ordering works.
About Patola dupattas
What is a Patola dupatta?
A Patola dupatta is a handwoven silk dupatta from Gujarat made in the ikat technique. The threads are tied and dyed with the pattern before they go on the loom, so the design is part of the weave itself, not printed on top. That is why every Patola has its soft, slightly feathered motif edges.
What is the difference between Single Ikat, Semi Ikat and Double Ikat?
A loom has two sets of threads: the lengthwise warp and the crosswise weft.
- Single Ikat: only one set of threads is dyed with the design. Light, bright and the most affordable way to own a real Patola.
- Semi Ikat: a blend of both techniques, with richer and sharper detail than Single Ikat.
- Double Ikat: both warp and weft are dyed and matched thread by thread on the loom. The pattern shows on both sides, and it is the rarest and most prized weave.
Explore them in Single Ikat, Semi Ikat and Double Ikat.
How long does it take to weave one Patola dupatta?
Tying, dyeing and weaving are all done by hand, step by step. Depending on the weave and the design, one dupatta can take from several weeks to a few months. Double Ikat pieces take the longest, because every thread in both directions has to line up exactly.
Why are Patola dupattas priced higher than printed dupattas?
You are paying for weeks of skilled handwork and pure silk, not a print. Each colour is dyed into the yarn separately, and the weaver aligns the pattern by hand on the loom. The more colours, the finer the motif and the more threads that are dyed, the higher the price, which is why Double Ikat costs the most.
What do the motifs mean? Navratna, Nari Kunjar, Panchanda…
- Navratna: "nine gems", a square-and-diamond grid that stands for good fortune.
- Nari Kunjar: women, elephants and parrots, a classic motif linked with joy and celebration.
- Panchanda: a five-part pattern, a traditional favourite in Gujarati weddings.
- Manekchowk: small geometric motifs set in a neat, even grid.
- Floral and Animals & Birds: flowers, birds and animals woven in the Patola style.

Is a Bandhani dupatta the same as a Patola dupatta?
No. In Bandhani, the finished fabric is pinched into tiny knots and dyed, which creates the dotted pattern. In Patola, the threads are dyed before weaving. Some of our pieces combine both: a Patola weave with Bandhani details. Browse them in Bandhani Dupatta.
Choosing your dupatta
How can I tell if a Patola dupatta is genuine?
- Look at the edges of the motifs: a real Patola has a soft, feathered outline, because the design was dyed into the yarn.
- Turn it over: the pattern is woven in, so it shows on the reverse too (fully on both sides in Double Ikat).
- Check the motifs: handwoven pieces have tiny natural variations that no print or machine copy has.
- Ask us to show it to you live on a video call before you buy.
Which dupatta should I pick for a wedding or a festival?
For weddings and big family functions, Double Ikat and Semi Ikat dupattas in rich colours such as red, maroon or green look regal, especially in Navratna or Nari Kunjar designs. For festivals, poojas and everyday ethnic wear, a Single Ikat dupatta is light, bright and easy to carry.
What can I wear a Patola dupatta with?
A Patola dupatta lifts even a simple outfit. Pair it with a plain kurta set, an anarkali, a lehenga or a plain saree in a colour taken from the dupatta's border. Let the dupatta be the statement and keep the rest of the look simple.
Is every dupatta exactly like the photo?
We photograph each piece in natural light. Because every dupatta is dyed and woven by hand, small variations in shade and motif are normal and are a sign of real handwork. Colours can also look slightly different on different screens. If you want to be sure, book a video call.
Can I find a dupatta by colour or by budget?
Yes. Use Shop by Colour to see dupattas in your favourite shade, or Shop by Price in the menu to browse within your budget.
